Granny's Sausage & Cheese French Toast

 

1 package (8-oz) brown and serve sausage patties
1 loaf (8-oz) Italian bread (about 16 inches long)
1/4 pound sliced cheese (Monterey Jack or Cheddar)
4 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon sugar
salad oil
2 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced
1 pint strawberries, washed
warm maple syrup


Prepare sausage according to package directions; drain. Cut bread into eight 1 1/2 inch thick diagonal slices. Cut a pocket in the top of each bread slice being careful not to slice all of the way through. Place cheese and sausage patties in pockets, cutting to fit. Press together. Beat eggs, milk and sugar with a fork in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Placed filled bread slices in egg mixture, turning over to coat both sides and making sure that all egg mixture is absorbed. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in large skillet over medium heat. Cook stuffed sandwiches about 10 minutes or until golden brown on both sides. Add more oil if necessary. Place sandwiches on serving platter; surround with fruit. Serve with maple syrup.
