            American Dill




The traditional American pickle. Also known as pickled gherkins! Makes approx. 3 x 850 ml jars.


convert measurements
12 pickling cucumbers/gherkins
500 ml water
450 ml distilled white vinegar
375 g coarsely chopped fresh dill
125 g sugar
8 garlic cloves, chopped
1 1/2 tbsp coarse salt
1 tbsp pickling spice
1 1/2 tsp dill seeds
1/2 tsp dried crushed red pepper


1. Combine all the ingredients except cucumbers in a large bowl.
Stir, let stand at room temperature for 2 hours until sugar and salt have dissolved.

2. Put 4 cucumbers to each of three jars. Pour the pickling mixture
over to cover completely. Place a few dill sprigs in each jar.

3. Seal tightly. Store in a refrigerator for at least 10 days.
The pickles will stay fresh for up to 1 month.
