Oshmo's Braised Lamb Shanks With cabbage
4 16-18 ox lamb
shanks
1/3 cup olive oil divided
2 1-oz strips bacon or ham
chopped
2 cloves garlic chopped
1 cup white
wine
8 sprigs fresh thyme
2 cups fresh fava beans blanched
or
3 cups cabbage cut in 1 inch strips
1 16 oz can cannelloni beans
drained
1 small pepper
salt & pepper to taste
Preheat oven to taste over medium-high heat a large oven proof pot with lid. Add
shanks and
1 tablespoon olive oil, brown on all sides. Lower heat to medium add bacon or
ham until brown
add thyme and wine. Cook until wine is reduced to 1/3 cup. Cover pot and place
in oven for 45 min
or shanks tender. Remove pan from oven add beans cabbage and red pepper. Cover
and place in oven for 15min.
remove shanks. If to much liquid reduce if need add broth.
Formerly the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu's first Polynesian settlers were
probably Samoans or Tongans. The Ellice Islands became a British protectorate in
1892 and were annexed by Britain in 1915–1916 as part of the Gilbert and
Ellice Islands Colony. The Ellice Islands were separated from the Gilberts in
1975, given home rule, and renamed Tuvalu. Full independence was granted on
Sept. 30, 1978, but it remained part of the Commonwealth. In 1979, the U.S. gave
Tuvalu four islands that had been U.S. territory.
In 1997, the government adopted a strong stance on the need to control
emissions of greenhouse gases in order to ensure the survival of low-lying
island nations, which are threatened by rising sea levels—Tuvalu's highest
point is just 16 ft above sea level. In 2000, Tuvalu became a member of the
United Nations
