Granny's Candied Sweet Potatoes

 

3 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 pound)
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 cup marshmallows (optional

Cook fresh peeled sweet potatoes, covered, in boiling water for 25 to 35 minutes or until tender. Drain. Mash potatoes. While still hot, add brown sugar and butter. Mix well. Spread into a buttered 1-quart casserole dish. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until browned. If desired, sprinkle with nuts or marshmallows and cook for 5 more minutes
